1.
THE time is short ere all that live Shall hence depart, their God to meet: And each a strict account must give, At Jesu’s awful judgement seat. The time is short, oh, who can tell How short his time below may be? Today on earth his soul may dwell, Tomorrow in eternity. The time is short; sinner beware! Nor squander these brief hours away? Oh flee to Christ by faith and prayer, Ere yet shall close this fleeting day. The time is short; ye saints rejoice! Your Saviour-Judge will quickly come; Soon shall you hear the Bridegroom’s voice Invite you to His heavenly home. The time is short, ere time shall cease, Eternity be ushered in, And death shall die, and joy and peace O'er the new earth benignant reign.

Remember Me 03:05
Who is it thus that turns his eyes To Jesus on the tree? Who to the friend of sinners cries, O Lord, remember me? Let mighty grace for ever reign , The dying thief, ‘tis he, While sinking to eternal pain, That cries, remember me. O dying love mysterious grace! So full, so rich, so free, What thought thy heights or depths can reach? He cries, remember me. Look on the wretch, whose hopes alone, With joy thy face to see, Hang on thy dear expiring groan, O Lord, remember me. Hast thou not for the sinner bled, This is my only plea; Thou Holy Lamb, to slaughter led, Then, O remember me. Did Justice smite with iron rod, In sad Gethsemane, Thy spotless soul, then, O my God! My God! remember me. Thus with the dying thief, in death, As vile and foul as he, We’ll join in one united breath, And cry, remember me.
3.
Awake, my soul, nor slumbering lie, Amid the gloomy haunts of death; Perhaps the awful hour is nigh, Commissioned for my parting breath. That awful hour will soon appear, Swift on the wings of time it flies, When all that pains or pleases here, Will vanish from my closing eyes. Death calls my friends, my neighbors hence, And none resist the fatal dart; Continual warnings strike my sense, And shall they fail to reach my heart? Shall light amusements rise between, When scenes of horror spread around? Death’s pointed arrows fly unseen, But ah, how sure, how deep they wound! Think, O my soul, how much depends, On the short period of a day; Shall time, which Heaven in mercy lends, Be negligently thrown away? Thy remnant minutes strive to use, Awake! rouse every active power! And not in dreams or trifles lose, This little now! this precious hour! Lord of my life, inspire my heart, With heavenly ardor, grace divine; Nor let Thy presence e’er depart, For strength, and life, and death are Thine. O teach me the celestial skill, Each awful warning to improve! And while my days are shortening still, Prepare me for the joys above. Ensure my nobler life on high, Life, from a dying Savior’s blood! Then, though my minutes swiftly fly, They bear me nearer to my God.
4.
Prepare me, gracious God, To stand before thy face; Thy spirit must the work perform, For it is all of grace. In Christ's obedience clothe, And wash me in his blood: So shall I lift my head with joy, Among the sons of God. Do thou my sins subdue, Thy sovereign love make known; The spirit of my mind renew, And save me in thy son. Let me attest thy power Let me thy goodness prove, 'Till my full soul can hold no more Of everlasting love.

about

Old hymnals used to have a whole section of hymns on the subject of Death, and maybe even another section of hymns for burials. This whole category of hymn texts has fallen out of use, and for the past few years I have been interested in why. In some cases it seems that the hymnwriters' attitudes toward death were quaint, but I think there are deeper reasons for our impulse to look away from the reality of death. I wrote all these tunes and made all these recordings by myself, in bedrooms and borrowed houses in Denton and Austin.
